About Dr. Mayra S. Artiles
Dr. Mayra S. Artiles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education at The Ohio State University and an NSF CAREER awardee. She also holds an adjunct faculty appointment at Arizona State University. Her research examines doctoral engineering programs, doctoral advising relationships, and the experiences of historically minoritized students — particularly Latino students — as they navigate the transition into and through the PhD. Her NSF CAREER project investigates how Hispanic-Serving Institutions enact servingness in doctoral engineering education, with the goal of informing how engineering colleges can better recruit, advise, and support future scholars.
Dr. Artiles joined Ohio State in 2024 after serving as an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic School, where she contributed to both the Engineering Education PhD program and the Automotive Engineering program. She completed her PhD in Engineering Education at Virginia Tech, followed by postdoctoral training there on minority doctoral student motivation and advising relationships. Her dissertation received the Outstanding Dissertation Award in Graduate and Post-Doctoral Education across the Disciplines from the American Educational Research Association. She is a member of the Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society and professional organizations including ASEE, AERA, and Tau Beta Pi.
Before her academic career, Dr. Artiles worked as an Electrified Vehicle Thermal Engineer at Ford Motor Company, leading projects in Dearborn, Michigan and Oakville, Canada. This industry experience continues to inform her interest in doctoral pathways, engineering workforce preparation, and the advising structures that support student success.
Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Artiles values mentorship and collaboration, working closely with graduate and undergraduate students to conduct rigorous, publishable research and engage national audiences at ASEE, AERA, and ASHE. Together with her students and colleagues, she is building evidence-based practices that advance equity, excellence, and servingness in doctoral engineering education.
In her spare time, Dr. Artiles enjoys traveling with her family, exploring international cuisines, and running with her beagle.
